The red carpets were rolled out several places in Ribe town and the Queen and the Prince are going to visit all these places in town: Ribe Cathedral, Ribe old town hall, the Viking Museum, the Viking Centre, the boat Johanne Dan, Tårnborg (where the famous bishop and hymn writer Brorson lived) and Sct. Catharinae’ square.
Lunch is served at the Cathedral School – and Danhostel Ribe has a representative at the lunch, because Jens is involved in the preparations for Ribe’s town jubilee…..at the hostel we are looking forward to hear him tell about it.

Stress af i Ribe

Hvorfor sidde i bilen og køre sydpå med lange bilkøer og ulidelig varme, når man kan stresse af og nyde tilværelsen i Danmark?

Hvorfor er Ribe ideel til afstresning?

Først og fremmest fordi byen er autentisk. En gåtur blandt de gamle huse, smalle gader og toppede brosten giver ro i sindet. Man sætter automatisk farten ned for at nyde alle sanseindtrykkene. F.eks.

• De flotte døre, stokroserne og blomsterkrukkerne som ripenserne sætter
   uden for døren for at glæde sig selv og andre.
• Vandet, der klukker i de mange åer i byen, og som har givet Ribe tilnavnet
   ”Danmarks Venedig”
• Gedernes brægen, ændernes rappen, frøernes  kvækken, rørdrummens
   kalden, suset fra stæreflokkens vinger (sort sol), vinden i træerne – alt
   efter hvilken af byens parker man besøger og på hvilken årstid.
• Lyset, der spiller så smukt i Carl Henning Pedersens flotte glasmosaikker i
   Ribe Domkirke
• Domkirkeklokken, der bryder stilheden med tonerne til Dronning Dagmar ligger udi i Ribe syg og Brorsons: Den yndigste rose
   er fundet.
• Vægteren, der med sin lygte i hånden, synger ripenserne til ro, når solen er gået ned
• Det store udsyn over Ribemarsken og Vadehavet (Nationalpark Vadehavet)  – over 30 km. i klart vejr fra Ribe Domkirkes tårn -
  når man har kæmpet og pustet sig op ad de 248 trin til toppen
• Smagsløgene kan tilfredsstilles i én af de mange caféer med borde ved åen, i gårde og på gågaden
• Osv., osv., osv.
Bliver man træt, kan man sætte sig på én af de mange bænke – i byen, i parkerne og ved åerne – og nyde indtrykkene og filosofere lidt over tilværelsen. Bænkene kan dog meget vel være optaget af ripenserne selv, der sidder der og følger med i gadens liv eller ”klarer verdenssituationen”.

Jo, stressede arbejdsmennesker kunne have gavn af sådan en tur.

Vi behøver ingen forskere til at fortælle os, at alle disse dejlige indtryk har stor betydning for menneskers velvære, vi kan nemlig mærke det på os selv og på vores gæster .

while they were filming this program in Ribe and the Wadden Sea. The last programs in the Scandinavian Cooking program were shown in more than 60 countries all over the world.
Probably these new programs with world premiere in 2010 will be shown in even more countries, because Nordic food has been even more popular since in 2010 the Danish gourmet restaurant NOMA with the chef René Redzepi and 2 Michelin stars  – and chef Claus Meyer as one of the co-owners – won the unofficial “world championship” for restaurants “the San Pellegrino Awards”. It is the first time a Danish restaurant wins the price in the magazine ahead of restaurants as Spain’s El Bulli and Britain’s The Fat Duck. To help elect the best restaurant in the world were 806 chefs, gastronomers and food reviewers.
The other chefs in the cooking series are Andreas Viestad, one of Norway’s most famous TV-chefs and a respected food writer and Tina Nordstrom, who is by far Sweden’s most celebrated TV-chef.

29th of May. Guided tour in the Photo Exhibition “My Ribe and Wadden Sea” by Gudrun Rishede

29th of May we – and many others in Ribe and Denmark – focus on “Tourism Day”. We do it by giving a free guided tour in the Photo Exhibition from 11am to 12am.
At the same time it will be possible to see the facilities of the hostel, rooms, common facilities, sports hall and conference facilities – or discuss our work with sustainable tourism. See also the invitation on our facebook 
The photos are all photographed by me, Gudrun Rishede – one of the writers on this blog and married to the manager of Danhostel Ribe, Jens Philipsen. I have photographed since I was child, and have through the years sold photos to among others: Danish Tourist Board, Ribe Tourist Board, Norden – Nordic Council of Ministers, Pilotprojekt Nationalpark Vadehavet and Ribe Viking Centre.
I have also made postcards from the local area, Vadehavskort (Wadden Sea Post Cards), which are sold from the hostel, Ribe Tourist board, Ribe Viking Museum and a few other places in the Wadden Sea area. I have also been honoured to be artist of the month in Ribe Art Club a couple of years ago and have one of my photos shown at Ribe Art Museum the winter 2009/10.

On this video you can see him win the Danish Championship (DM) in indoor rock climbing in Danhostel Ribe’s sports hall Ribehallen.
It was great to see all the brilliant climbers.  This was the first time the Danish Championship took place in Southwest Jutland – but hopefully it will be back again, now that we have finally got one of the best walls in Denmark.

Ribe Klatreklub (Ribe Climbing Club) did an excellent job both before and during the Championship and we only met satisfied climbers and visitors.
Rikke Kristensen from Ribe Klatreklub took a lot of good pictures, some of them you can see on our facebook – some of them are placed in the start and the end of this video and later you will also see them in magazines  and books about rock climbing

Women: Mette Thomsen, Københavns Klatreklub, winner rock climbing senior women 2010

The route was built by Christian Bindhammer from Germany
He is an experienced rock climber and has won several German and international prices – like the German Championship Frankenthal  2007 (Deutsche Meisterschaft Frankenthal 2007) and a second place in Rock Climbing World Cup in Valence, France (Weltcup Valence 2004).
We understand why he won these prices, because after the chairman of the Ribe climbers, Allan Beck, and the vice mayor of Esbjerg municipality, Jakob Lose, had opened  the Danish Championship, Christian Bindhammer climbed the route he built, to show how  it CAN be done  Spider-Man-style.
While he was climbing you could watch how the Danish climbers prepared themselves mentally and physically by studying his route and moves doing the same movements with their arms and legs while standing on the sports hall’s floor.

I also got almost to the top, but it was with help from a lift and Rikke, a climber from Ribe Klatreklub. From the lift I made my first movie ever and now it is showed on Danhostel Ribe’s facebook, on You Tube, and now here on our blog. This documentary film is from the qualifying round of senior women with a few photos from climbers, speakers, and spectators in the sports hall.

At the market you will meet the best Viking craftsmen working and probably strike a good bargain, you will smell the Viking Food being cooked in the fire place and meet the farmer and his animals. You will see horsemen on Icelandic horses, Viking warriors fighting, the falconer letting his birds of prey fly, musicians, jesters an if you are not afraid you can let the vølva Gunna tell your fortune.

Water organ show at the river outside the hostel
A beautiful and very special sight could be seen at the river outside the hostel’s windows the 2nd and third April. It was a gift from the fire brigade in Güstrow, Ribe’s twin town in Germany. Together with the fire brigade of Visselhövede they have given Ribe a fantastic water organ show for birthday present because of Ribe’s 1300 year anniversary. It was an explosion of water, colours and music and the height of the fountain followed the music. The show was performed by fire men craftsmen (not computers). The water organ was placed on the hostel’s side of the river and pumped 1000 liters of water from the river per minute for the show…an alternative occupation for fire men, when they are not putting out fires.
Hundreds of Ribe citizens and tourists came to see the beautiful show, and at Danhostel Ribe we have been very safe these Eastern days because the hostel has been swarming with fire men.
Ribe’s fire brigade has also showed the development of Ribe fire brigade the last 120 years in a procession though Ribe and it has been possible to visit them at the fire station and on the meadow outside the hostel.

Earth Hour - A historical walk in the dark Ribe with Ribe's night watchmen from Danhostel Ribe

Ribe's watchman Hans Peters has just told his group about the medieval night wacthman in Ribe who drank too much and fell asleep on duty when the town was flooded in an storm surge and the rich merchant's animals drowned. The night watchman lost his job and Ribe found a new watchman who didn't drink and also was a better singer
